Roofing Types – Single-Ply

One of the most popular choices for commercial and industrial properties in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire is what is known as single-ply roofing. There are a couple of different roofing systems that fall into this category. At A&M Sheet Metal & Roofing, the two types of single-ply roofing that we work with primarily include Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) and Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) roofing systems. While both of these single-ply roofing materials have beneficial qualities that are remarkably similar, each option offers distinct advantages that may be appealing to our commercial and industrial clients. If you aren’t sure which product will best suit your needs, including the condition of your property, type of construction, and budgetary concerns, our team can help by providing you with a detailed estimate and professional consulting services.

EPDM Roofing

Also known in the industry as “rubber” roofing, EPDM is widely used with commercial, industrial, institutional, and municipal structures because it is excellent for all types of roofs and can even serve as a means for damp-proofing a building. Extremely durable and flexible, EPDM rubber roofing is ozone-stable, UV-stable, and designed to move with the structure as it shifts over time, providing long-lasting strength and protection. The flexibility of EPDM roofing makes it an excellent choice for regions where the weather is a concern. For example, it has been successfully installed and tested in the heat and humidity of Florida, as well as the freezing temperatures and extreme conditions of Alaska, with excellent results. Roofing systems in New England face many challenges due to the wide range of temperatures and weather conditions experienced throughout the seasons. With EPDM rubber roofing, the weather is never a problem. Ongoing costs for this material are surprisingly low, requiring minimal repairs and attention throughout its lifetime. TPO Roofing

The other type of single-ply roofing that we specialize in is the TPO roofing system. Designed to provide all of the long-lasting durability of rubber roofing systems like EPDM, TPO roofing systems also provide all of the proven performance that comes from the use of hot-air weldable seams. This makes TPO roofing highly resistant to tears, punctures, and even impacts, providing excellent flexibility to allow for changes in the structure over time. Similar to EPDM roofing, TPO is resistant to ozone, UV rays from the sun, and offers protection from algae, mold, mildew, and moss growth. However, the seam strength of TPO roofing has been determined to be three to four times the adhesive and tape seams used with EPDM rubber roofing. Extensively tested in a variety of climates and conditions, TPO roofing is also friendly to the environment and highly resistant to many types of damage that can commonly affect commercial and industrial roofing in New England. Choose from a variety of thicknesses, widths, and color choices, depending on the manufacturer and requirements for your structure.
